For the Party!
Volodya Ustritsov, wounded and taken prisoner, bravely endured all the nazi torture. On May 6, 1944, the retreating nazis transferred him to Peshin gaol in Poland and killed him on May 26. Before dying he scratched a few parting words with a nail on a piece of black cardboard. After the town’s liberation, Polish security officials came across the cardboard in the Gestapo archives and sent it to the Soviet Union.
