2. Mode of Production—the Determinative Force
of Social Development

[introduction.]

People cannot exist without food, clothing, shelter and other necessities of life. Nature, however, does not provide these things ready-made; to produce them people must work. Labour is, therefore, the basis of social life, a natural necessity for man. Without labour, without productive activity human life itself would be impossible. The production of material wealth is consequently the chief, determinative factor of social development.
